Work Logs: Week 2

Week 2: February 6, 2017-February 10, 2017 (9/25 hrs.)

Week two has been filled with some of my best days so far. I am beginning to feel much more comfortable on air as I got to participate and speak during almost every single segment this week. Some of the bits I was in were about National Pizza Day which was February 9th, Valentine’s Day which is coming up next week, and one which pertained to our poll question about shows we watched as a kid that we probably shouldn’t have. My example was not a show, but instead the movie Jaws. I watched it when I was around 6 years old and then had nightmares of a shark coming through my floor that night. It was cool to be able to share my personal experiences or thoughts and laugh about it alongside Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson’s experiences. I have also become more involved in the giveaway contests. This week I got to pick all three trivia questions for our Free Movie Friday giveaway, and announce the questions on air for listeners to call in. Our theme of the day was Romantic Comedies and I decided to choose 50 First Dates, Hitch, and 10 Things I Hate About You to ask the trivia questions about. I was really pleased in the end because all three worked out perfectly and I presented them smoothly. Besides my participation in the show, I talked with Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson about a lot of different behind the scenes details such as their computer programming, what happens when someone or both people are absent from the show, and promotions. The best part of the week was when Mr. Scott, Mr. Wilson and I sat down to talk after the show to discuss the overall weaknesses and strengths that we noticed, and how we can improve in the future. At this time, I was able to get some criticism from them. Although they said I did great overall and the three of us worked well together, they did mention that I tend to hesitate when I’m asked a question instead of responding immediately. I definitely agree with them, and I have room to improve there. I appreciate their criticism and I will try to be mindful of this and work on it every day. Even with this criticism, I felt really encouraged and proud of my performance this week.

Tasks completed for the week:

  • Participated in show segments

  • Trivia questions for the giveaways

  • Help another organization get a PSA set up

  • Meeting with Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson

Things I learned this week:

  • In every studio, we use a computer software called “Next Gen.” I asked some questions about it to figure out the purpose and uses of it. This program runs the playlist of songs and segment breaks that we have and it runs it on time due to when we have planned the breaks. Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson have the ability to change and move around these playlist slots if need be. The other cool thing about this program is that it stores audio clips and sound effects that can be easily accessed and clicked on whenever we see fit during our live segments. From what I saw it seems pretty simple and useful overall.

  • We discussed endorsements again today because I had someone approach me about getting a Public Service Announcement made for their non-profit organization. It was useful for me that they asked as it was a learning experience for us both. I found out that PSA’s for non-profits are free of charge to air and that they can set it up by contacting Mr. Scott. All the other endorsements or advertisements are set up through our sales representatives that work out deals with them in terms of how long the ad should be, what it should say, the amount of time they would like the ad to be played consecutively, and the prices.

  • Something that is pretty rare but does happen is when one person, or both people cannot make it to the show. This week Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson were schedule to have an interview with Sara Evans, but something came up and neither of them could make it. Instead, another DJ from a different show volunteered to take their place. Another example is, this Wednesday, Mr. Wilson could not make it to the show so he found someone to co-host with him to keep it interesting. Sometimes it can be someone from our office like our web specialists, Victoria, or a random special guest that is invited to the show.

  • Events can vary but I found out that a lot of events or “remotes” are on weekends or evening week day hours at specific locations. Sometimes they are requested to show up at a business’s or another organization’s event in order to play music or host. For example, Mr. Scott has been asked to host an event at a restaurant. Another example, Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson were asked to appear at a mattress store, and they brought changes to win a big prize, which influences more traffic to come to the store and take a look around.

  • I learned about promotions or “promos.” Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson explained that we run promos on-air sometimes during other shows on Froggy 99.9 or during the off hours in the morning before we come on live as a way of promoting people to listen to our show. In these promos, we are to select our favorite, most interesting, and or funniest segments of each show and we will edit them into short clips to give a preview of our show. These encourage people to listen because they are similar to a highlight reel of our best of the best moments. It is our hope that people will get a feel for our show and our personalities in these short clips and be interested enough that they will begin to join us for our live shows.

  • Something that randomly came up in conversation in the studio as we watched the news one morning this week was a trick of the trade in terms of news broadcasting. Mr. Wilson informed me that if news reporters want to sweep a story under the rug, they will air it specifically on a Friday afternoon. This is because many people are preoccupied at this time and less people will be paying attention to what is being reported. His advice was to always check the news even at that time because I could miss something really important.
