Work Logs: Week 7

Week 7: March 20, 2017- March 24, 2017 (20.5/89.5 hrs.)

This week was a long one for sure, but also very enjoyable. It was technically my spring break from college but I decided to spend as many hours here as I could so I could get the feeling of a real full work day. I had a great time even though I worked long hours because it was so busy and there wasn’t much of the normal routine. We had some cool special guests, I went to my first Promotions and Marketing meeting, and I was able to transcribe spots for the first time.

Tasks completed this week:

  • Participated in the show each day

  • Sat in for an interview with Harlem Globetrotter, Buckets

  • Finished cleaning the storage closet from last week

  • Transcribed a spot

  • Updated the social media accounts each day: all 4 Instagram accounts and Pinterest

  • Sat in for the Promotions and Marketing meeting

  • Organized and put together prize packs for Shorebirds tickets

  • Added events to the community calendar on our websites

  • Oversaw the Bid on Delmarva website

Things I learned this week:

  • It was really cool to sit in for the interview with Buckets, the Harlem Globetrotter team member. I enjoyed it because I have previous interview experience and a passion for conducting interviews. I have done so at WXSU at Salisbury University, so I was interested to see how they did things differently at Froggy. He came in and recorded the interview which would play later in the week because they are going to be playing at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.

  • I honestly had no idea about transcriptions at all. I didn’t know what they were, what you were supposed to do, or the purpose of them. Therefore, when I was asked to do so, I asked a bunch of questions and in the end I was glad I did because I learned a lot. These transcriptions are simply the typed script of the audio spot. In order to successfully get that, you repeatedly play the spot over and over until you have typed the script from start to finish, word for word. It is a pretty simple task but I found it more enjoyable that expected. I was given a template in order to do this and I was instructed that depending on the amount of time of the spot, the script should reach to a certain line on the template. Once these are completed, we must send them to the people who have asked us to run their commercial.

  • Sitting in the meeting was interesting even though I didn’t know a lot of what they talked about. Although I’m not fluent in marketing and promotions, I was able to pick up on the way these meetings run each time. They discuss and update everyone in the station about things that are currently being conducted, things that will be ending with certain campaigns, and then they open the floor to any suggestions. For example, they discuss the current companies that they are working with for promotional giveaways, the number that they have left of those things, and then asked for suggestions of places to get more and or brand new promotional opportunities to work. Due to convenience of everyone being together, they also mentioned things that needed to be taken care of such as broken equipment that needs fixing, the vans that need cleaning, and a meeting that needs to be set up and then who is responsible for each of those things. It was most effective for them to all be included and present for the conversations so things can be accomplished easier and quicker.
