Work Logs: Week 3

Week 3: February 13, 2017-February 17, 2017 (6/31 hrs.)

This was a short work week for me as I only attended the show for two days. Nonetheless, it was interesting and busy because it was Valentine’s Day week, Mr. Wilson was sick, and we had a special guest with us one day. On Valentine’s Day, Mr. Wilson was sick so I had to fill in as co-host. My main job was to help Mr. Scott run the show as smoothly as possible. Every day it seems like I’m getting more responsibilities and I’m challenged a little more which I love.  I’m beginning to feel like I really have a voice and important contributions to this show. Mr. Scott gave me some tips before I presented some of our segments today and some personal stories, and afterwards he gave me some criticism. He commented that I did really well as I spoke fluidly, kept the story interesting and to the point, but did not rush as I met the allotted speaking time before the next set of songs was set to play. This show was also nice because we had a special guest who comes every Valentine’s Day, Surprisingly Single Kelly. It was really nice to meet her and to have another female opinion in the studio in contrast to our usual set up. During the second show of the week, I had an off day and was a little disappointed in myself, but I was able to learn some things.

Tasks completed this week:

  • Presenting segments on the show

  • Successfully pitching topic ideas for segments

  • Hosting the show with Mr. Scott and Kelly

Things I learned this week:

  • I learned that I really love have guests in the studio. That’s more of a personal preference than the knowledge of a new skill, but I had a realization that the energy is so different when we have a guest with us on the show. I love the fresh spin and variety it adds to our daily routine.

  • The importance of good communication and good chemistry when going into segments together. If you do not prepare together and bounce off of each other well, then the segment will be rocky. I noticed this because Mr. Scott would set me up for a lot of segments on air and because of that they would run smoothly from start to finish. By this, I mean we would discuss the topic we would talk about before going on-air, and then Mr. Scott would introduce the topic on-air by leading me into the segment with a question about our topic.

  • I learned that sometimes you learn best by making a mistake. I had the chance to pitch a story for our segment “What’s Trending” and I failed to do so in time, so I was really disappointed with myself as I was not as involved in the show segments that day. I was lucky because Mr. Scott and Mr. Wilson were really encouraging and gave me some great tips to help me prepare better in the future. This definitely put me on my toes and helped me to refocus as I don’t want to feel like I let them again again.
